Learn to Skate information can be obtained at the Ice Factory of Central Florida, or through the Learn to Skate USA website.
General How do I choose a coach?
Choosing a coach is as much about the students current skills and goals, as it is about the personality of the skater themselves. When choosing a coach, which may take time and some trial and error, you want to find a coach who's standards, methods and beliefs match with your skater, as well as having a good personality match. Remember coaches work to push the skater to their potential, and each coach has different means and methods to do so, meaning that a coach isn't always going to be your skaters best friend.

If you're skater is currently in Learn to Skate, speak to their instructor to determine if and when they'll be at a point to move on to private lessons. Rule of thumb is typically when the student gets to a point where they either want to compete, or advance out of the Learn to Skate Free Skate levels and into US Figure Skating to begin testing for more advanced skills.

US Figure Skating What is the difference between Freeskate and Moves in the Field?
Moves in the field is a basic skating skills progression. Each test level has several set patterns of turns, edges, spirals and steps that get progressively more difficult. Free skating tests require skaters to perform a program with jumps, spins and step sequences. Skaters must pass the Moves in the Field test for each level of progression prior to taking the Freeskate exam for the same level. For example, prior to taking the Juvenile Freeskate test, the skater must have already taken and passed the Juvenile Moves in the Field test.
US Figure Skating What are Moves in the Field?
Moves are about posture, carriage, flow, power, and quickness. These elements are all considered important when executing a move. Each move emphasizes different aspect of these elements, When testing, each move will have a primary and often a secondary focus that the judges are looking for. For example the pre-preliminary move "Forward Perimeter Stroking" has a primary emphasis on power and a secondary on extension. It is important to understand what each of these terms means so that you can successfully practice and test each move. Your coach can provide you with the information about what is expected for each move sequence, and when your skater is ready to take a test.
General How do I get a solo program, or get my skater a solo program created?
If you're interested in putting together a program for competition or other reasons, the first step is to speak to the skaters coach about the intent to create a program. The coach will be able to provide you details about what is expected at each level for a program, as each level requires specific elements to be included for the program to be considered 'complete' for competition.
